Dignity and decency is alive and well in many workplaces because Michigan is a free bargaining state which allows working people to collectively negotiate contractual rights and benefits.
Free Bargaining has wrought better and equal pay regardless of ones gender.
Free bargaining has established better treatment of employees regardless of ones gender.
Free bargaining has tempered the "whims" of the boss.
Free bargaining has provided better benefits for working families. I am deeply grateful for these union negotiated benefits which have allowed me to provide for my family.
Dignity and decency is in peril in Michigan because of those who want to undermine and destroy free bargaining here.
Using the catchy frame "right to work", a coalition of well funded organizations have kept up the drum beat to make Michigan a "right to work" state. There is a possibility they will "buy" enough signatures (paying upwards of $2.50 each) to put this proposal on this fall's ballot to be voted upon.
Stay tuned...

welcome back Lakemich!! nice of you to dust off your password. it sounds like out of state interests are trying to buy their way into Michigan's constitution AGAIN! looking forward to more on this subject.
Excellent article. All workers need to take notice of the mounting assaults on their wages. Cities such as Lansing are considering abandoning the prevailing wage (amount needed to pay rent, for a car, eat) for wages under $10 per hour. Who can live on that and buy a car and put a few dollars in the bank? Lansing and the tri county area of Ingham, Clinton & Eaton Counties enjoy realtive prosperity due to union wages; allied non union industries paying equivalent union wages. People need to earn at least $15 per hour to basically live. If the entire community is reduced to wages that low then no one will be able to buy a house, car or go to sporting or other entertainment events. THINK about it before it is too late. Thank you and enter all of your elected officials telephone numbers in your cell phone and call them whenever they do something you do not like or like. They need your votes and represent you. Call them at night & leave your name, address & hm number, or call during business hours and reach a staff person.
